Interview with Susan Henderson, volunteer at Athens Wellness Clinic

What inspired you to volunteer at the Athens Wellness Clinic, and how do you personally connect with the clinic's mission of providing healthcare to those without insurance?

In the forty plus years that I have lived in Athens, I always knew about the Athens Nurses Clinic (now Athens Wellness Clinic) through publicity and one of the founders, Shelby Lacy. Shelby and I attended church together and the Clinic was a passion of hers. Her passion inspired me! When I retired from being a media specialist in 2014, I wanted to do something with the Athens Nurses Clinic.

Can you describe a typical day for you at the front desk? How do you help ensure that patients feel welcomed and supported, especially considering many may be facing significant challenges in accessing healthcare?

I work at the front desk at the Clinic. I greet patients, sign them in and schedule the next appointments. I answer the phone and help people who want to become patients at the clinic. I try to greet each person with a smile, hoping they feel welcomed.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering at a free clinic, and how does it impact your perspective on healthcare access and the challenges faced by underserved communities?

I like working with the patients and the staff and feel like I can make a difference, even if it is just being kind to someone who may not feel good when they come in.

What are some of the most common barriers or concerns patients bring to the clinic, and how do you help navigate these issues to ensure they receive the care they need?

So many of our phone calls are from people seeking dental care. Some times we can help and other times all we can do is share other resources that may help. I help direct patients to those who can help them when we aren’t able to.

How does volunteering at the Athens Wellness Clinic influence your view of healthcare in general, and what changes would you like to see in the healthcare system to improve access for uninsured individuals?

Access to healthcare for those who can’t afford it is critical, and what Athens Wellness Clinic provides to the community is sorely needed. To further help those in need, it would be helpful if we had more funding and could be open five days a week instead of three.
