Volunteer Provider Spotlight: Dr. Doug Cleveland, DD

Filling the Need: Dr. Cleveland’s Lifelong Mission in Dentistry

Dr. Doug Cleveland, a dedicated dentist with nearly 50 years of experience, has spent much of his life using his hands to bring relief and care to those in need. From the moment he was 12 years old, Dr. Cleveland knew he was destined for a career in dentistry, driven by a desire to help others and a natural skill for working with his hands. After earning his degree from Emory University Dental School, Dr. Cleveland opened his practice in Jefferson, Georgia, where he continued to build his reputation as a compassionate and skilled professional. Throughout his career, he has remained steadfast in his mission to help those who need it most, which led him to become a key figure in the Athens Wellness Clinic's dental clinic.

Nearly three decades ago, Dr. Cleveland, alongside Dr. Charles Birch, helped establish the dental clinic at the Athens Nurses Clinic (now Athens Wellness Clinic), recognizing a dire need in the community. His wife, Janna, a Nurse Practitioner at the clinic, had shared stories of patients suffering from severe dental pain and limited access to care. Despite operating in a modest, outdated building with limited resources, the clinic's team made it work. The clinic has since become a vital resource for those without insurance or access to quality healthcare, particularly the underserved populations in Athens and surrounding areas. Through his work at the clinic, Dr. Cleveland has had the opportunity to not only provide dental care but also mentor future dental professionals, sharing his wealth of knowledge with pre-dental students who assist with patient care.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Cleveland has received several notable awards, including the prestigious Pierre Fauchard Award for his work with dental students capped by his recent acceptance as Fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international honorary dental society that recognizes and develops outstanding leadership in the dental profession. He was also awarded "Rotarian of the Year" for his work with Rotary International.

Dr. Cleveland’s volunteer work has extended beyond local borders, as he has traveled internationally to provide dental care in underserved regions. For Dr. Cleveland, volunteering at the Athens Wellness Clinic continues to be an incredibly fulfilling aspect of his career. He finds it rewarding to be part of a team that makes a tangible difference in the lives of those who otherwise wouldn’t have access to essential dental care. For him, the clinic is a crucial resource in the community, offering life-changing services to individuals who may not otherwise receive the care they deserve.
